Beaver Hills Biosphere Large Predator Samples - Parks Canada, Elk Island
Bear, Cougar & Wolf Tissue Samples for DNA Database
Contribute To Science!
In collaboration with Beaver Hills Biosphere and Parks Canada, with the
Elk Island Park team.
In collaboration with the Alberta Trappers Association, we are trying to understand the genetic structure and movement of populations of large carnivores across Alberta.
The Alberta Trappers were invited to provide tissue or hair/skin samples or even scat, if that’s what they found.
We were hoping for a broad area of coverage as well as a significant participation from Alberta's trappers.
We need your assistance collecting tissue samples from across the province for wolves, cougars, and black bears for a DNA database being created here in Alberta.
You could help with the following:
Provide samples (muscle, hide, blood and hair).
We are also interested in fresh scat. We will supply you with sampling kits and instructions.
They paid $20 per sample for this.
These programs can sometimes be a small financial return to the trapper but these programs are the kind of projects that provide important data used by science. If you are interested and able to help, please contact:
